BEFORE YOU LAUNCH YOUR APP

A launch starts before release day. Chris's framework builds an audience, captures behavior, collects demand, supports retention and prepares the product's first impression.

THE WAITLIST

START WITH A WAITLIST

Chris sets up a waitlist far ahead of launch—often before development begins. It creates an early signal of interest and a direct line to people who may test or adopt the app.

KEEP THE WAITLIST SIMPLE

The page does not need to explain everything. Chris uses a single app screenshot and an email form that promises notifications about launch and beta access.

A WAITLIST HAS THREE JOBS

1. Gauge early interest.

2. Recruit beta testers.

3. Create a launch audience that can become the first wave of users.

USE LIGHTWEIGHT TOOLS

Chris builds landing pages in Framer. He notes that Framer supports forms, while his own email collection uses Formspark. His principle is speed: a basic waitlist can be assembled quickly.

THE ANALYTICS

ADD ANALYTICS BEFORE USERS ARRIVE

Analytics often gets postponed because there are few users. Chris recommends installing it before launch so early behavior is recorded and future product decisions have evidence behind them.

ANALYTICS ANSWERS THE FIRST WHY

The central purpose is to see early churn. Observe whether people sign up, use the product and return. Without behavioral evidence, it is difficult to tell whether the product works or where it fails.

THE FEEDBACKS

CREATE A PUBLIC FEEDBACK BOARD

A feedback board gives users one place to submit feature requests and vote for other requests. Popular needs rise to the top, giving the builder a visible signal for roadmap priorities.

VOTES REVEAL HIDDEN DEMAND

Chris says highly upvoted requests repeatedly challenge his own assumptions. The board surfaces patterns that a private idea list or the founder's intuition may miss.

THE ELLIE LIST FEATURE

In Ellie's original product, Chris had no plan to build lists. Strong demand on the feedback board changed the roadmap. He says the resulting feature is now used every day by him and other users.

CLOSE THE PRODUCT-LEARNING LOOP

Analytics shows what users do. The feedback board shows what they ask for. Together, they help explain churn, prioritize the roadmap and guide improvements that may increase retention.

THE EMAIL SEQUENCE

SET UP EMAIL AS A SYSTEM

Chris recommends installing an email sequence system early. It should support event-triggered messages, scheduled sequences and manual sends—even if the more advanced flows are not used immediately.

TRIGGER THE RIGHT MESSAGE

1. Send a welcome email after signup.

2. If a user is inactive for seven days, ask for feedback.

3. Teach overlooked features through a timed onboarding sequence.

TEACH DURING THE FIRST 14 DAYS

For Ellie, Chris sends five emails over two weeks to explain lesser-known features. The sequence reminds new users to return and helps them discover capabilities they might otherwise miss.

"EMAIL AS A WAY TO IMPROVE RETENTION AND REDUCE CHURN..."

CHRIS'S EMAIL TOOL

Chris uses Loops because he likes its interface, free-plan availability and responsive support. He explicitly says the mention is not sponsored.

THE APPSTORE LISTING

TREAT THE APP STORE PAGE AS SALES

For an iOS app, the listing is a major discovery and conversion surface. Chris argues that organic App Store search can matter when the listing is prepared carefully.

SCREENSHOTS CARRY THE FIRST DECISION

Screenshots are often the first material a potential user examines. Strong images help people understand the app, judge whether it deserves attention and decide whether to download it.

SPEND REAL TIME ON SCREENSHOTS

After months of product work, listing assets can feel minor. Chris sees high return in giving screenshots several focused days because they strongly shape the app's first impression.

OPTIMIZE THE WHOLE LISTING

Screenshots lead, while the title, description and tags also affect discovery and downloads. Chris advises researching these fields and treating each one as part of the launch asset.

THE CLAIMED LAUNCH BOOST

Chris believes Apple gives newly launched apps an early period of increased discovery. He is uncertain whether it lasts days or up to two weeks. The transcript provides no supporting data, so treat this as his experience—not a verified rule.

THE LANDING PAGE

REPLACE THE WAITLIST WITH A LANDING PAGE

The waitlist page captures emails before launch. The full landing page showcases the finished application and directs visitors toward downloading it.

REUSE YOUR LAUNCH ASSETS

The polished screenshots and files created for the App Store can support the landing page. Reusing them reduces duplicate work and keeps the product presentation consistent.

GIVE THE PAGE ABOUT A WEEK

Chris usually spends at least a week on the landing page. He also says it can improve over time, so its pursuit of quality should not indefinitely delay the release.

THE MOMENTUM

LAUNCH WHEN USERS SHOW STAYING POWER

Chris launches when he has high confidence that users will stay. If beta users disappear after one day, he reads that as a warning. If they keep using the app for several days, he sees a possible readiness signal.

"I LAUNCH IT WHEN I HAVE A HIGH CONFIDENCE THAT USERS ARE GOING TO STICK..."

THERE IS NO FIXED RETENTION THRESHOLD

Chris does not use a specific numerical benchmark. He combines beta analytics with judgment about whether users appear likely to stay. This makes the decision practical, but subjective and difficult to reproduce exactly.

CHRIS'S USUAL LAUNCH

His normal launch includes a YouTube video, several posts on X, sometimes a LinkedIn post and an email to the waitlist. He acknowledges that this is shaped by his own comfort level.

A LARGER LAUNCH NEEDS MOMENTUM

Chris's larger-launch concept: post during the week before launch, ask friends to share, launch on Product Hunt and reach relevant communities such as Reddit and online forums.

THE COMPLETE PRE-LAUNCH SEQUENCE

1. Publish a waitlist.

2. Recruit beta users.

3. Install analytics.

4. Open a feedback board.

5. Build email sequences.

6. Polish the app store listing.

7. Build the landing page.

8. Launch when beta users return.

WHAT THIS FRAMEWORK CAN PROVE

The video title says four apps were 100% profitable, but the transcript gives no revenue, cost or comparison data. The framework is therefore a founder's repeatable operating method—not proof that every step causes profitability.

THE BEST WAY TO LAUNCH YOUR STARTUP

Most founders treat launch day like a single, irreversible event.

The YC lesson is simpler: your first launch begins the learning process. Release something, observe what happens, improve it, and return to the market repeatedly.

THE CENTRAL LAUNCHING MISTAKE

Founders often spend months polishing the product and messaging because they believe they have only one chance.

For most early startups, the first launch receives little attention. Waiting six months can be more dangerous than releasing something imperfect.

THE STRUCTURE OF THIS GUIDE

1. When should you launch, and why?

2. How do you explain the company in one clear sentence?

3. Which launch types can you use to reach users, test demand, and launch continuously?

WHEN TO LAUNCH

LAUNCH AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

A startup needs contact with reality.

Launching early reveals whether the problem is important enough for someone to use the product, pay for it, or tolerate an unfinished version because the value is already meaningful.

ADD EVIDENCE TO CONVICTION

Founders need conviction, and strong conviction can create attachment to assumptions.

Before launch, ideas about customer behavior remain theoretical. Real users reveal how they understand the product, experience the problem, and respond to the solution.

WHAT AN EARLY LAUNCH TESTS

An early launch helps answer four questions:

Is the problem painful?
Does the product solve it?
Will anyone use it now?
Will anyone pay?

The goal is practical information that changes what you build next.

WHAT COULD GO WRONG?

People may think the product looks ugly or incomplete. Investors or competitors may see it early. Nobody may notice.

These outcomes create useful signals. The founder can study what happened, improve the product, and prepare another launch.

WHEN NOBODY CARES

Launching and receiving little attention feels terrible.

It may indicate weak positioning, the wrong audience, an ineffective channel, or insufficient value. Treat the result as a diagnosis that guides the next version of the startup.

AIRBNB LAUNCHED THREE TIMES

Airbnb launched repeatedly before it began attracting meaningful user activity.

Each attempt created another chance to learn, improve the product, sharpen the story, and reach a better audience.

THE LAUNCH-AND-ITERATE LOOP

Launch.

Observe user behavior.

Talk to users.

Identify what they love or reject.

Improve the product and message.

Launch again.

Continue until a small group cares deeply enough to keep using the product.

MAKE A FEW PEOPLE VERY HAPPY

Paul Buchheit’s principle focuses on making a few people extremely happy.

A small group of passionate users gives you stronger feedback, better morale, and a clearer signal about what deserves more attention.

TEN USERS CAN BE A FOUNDATION

Even ten users who genuinely love the product can reveal your direction.

Ask what they value, why alternatives fail them, and what would make the product indispensable. Then search for more people with the same problem and behavior.

KEEP GOING COCKROACH STYLE

Early progress may be slow and uncomfortable.

The task is to remain persistent, keep learning, and expand the number of users who care. A startup can win by surviving repeated weak launches long enough to find a strong signal.

THE ONE-SENTENCE PITCH

CLARITY OF VISION COMES FIRST

Founders who understand their idea deeply should be able to explain it clearly and briefly.

A strong description makes a complex product understandable to someone unfamiliar with the market, without requiring a long presentation.

CLARITY CREATES WORD OF MOUTH

Organic word of mouth is one of the cheapest ways to grow.

Users, employees, investors, and friends can spread the idea only when they can remember and explain it. Your description should be easy enough to repeat in an ordinary conversation.

LEAD WITH WHAT YOU DO

Begin with the company name and what the product does.

Give the listener immediate context. After they understand the product, continue with the problem, mission, founder journey, and reasons the company matters.

PAVE: A CLEAR DESCRIPTION

Pave described itself as a product that lets companies plan, communicate, and benchmark compensation in real time.

The sentence quickly identifies the customer, the activity, and the product’s function without a long introduction.

REMOVE MEANINGLESS JARGON

Terms such as synergy, ecosystem, transformation, and next-generation often add little information.

A listener should understand what the company does and roughly what would need to be built to reproduce it.

BAD EXAMPLE: INDIECLOUD

This description could refer to education, collaboration, consulting, or an expert marketplace.

It has almost no informational value because the customer, problem, product, and action remain invisible. Concrete language would make the company understandable.

KEEP THE PITCH TIGHT

A one-line description establishes context quickly and makes the listener curious enough to ask a follow-up question.

Long introductions consume attention before the product becomes clear. Save the wider vision for the conversation that follows.

AIRBNB: A STRONG ONE-LINER

Airbnb’s early description explained that travelers could book rooms from local people as an alternative to hotels.

It clearly communicated the customer, the action, the marketplace model, and the existing option being replaced.

OPENQUEUE: PROBLEM AND USER

OpenQueue’s description tells the audience what the product helps them do and who it is for.

The listener can immediately imagine a tool that helps B2B companies identify and contact potential customers.

YUM: THE ORIGINAL VERSION

The original line emphasizes machine learning.

Customers may care more about the outcome. Technical language can distract from the product’s actual value: personalized support for employee stress and mental health.

YUM: THE CLEARER VERSION

The revised description shifts attention from the technology to the customer benefit.

It is easier to understand because it identifies the service, the personalization, and the intended user without requiring knowledge of machine learning.

SHOULD YOU USE X FOR Y?

Phrases such as “Uber for X” or “Airbnb for Y” can create a fast mental picture.

Prepare a clear standalone description as the primary pitch. Use the analogy as an optional shortcut when the comparison is immediately understandable.

WHEN X FOR Y WORKS

Use the structure when:

X is a household name.
It is obvious why Y needs a similar product.
Y represents a very large market.

When the listener must research X, the analogy creates additional work.

WEAK ANALOGY: BUFFER FOR SNAPCHAT

A company once described itself as “Buffer for Snapchat.”

Buffer lacked universal recognition, so the comparison created another explanation problem. A direct description of the customer problem would have communicated the idea faster.

STRONGER ANALOGY: HARKALIVE

The analogy creates a quick picture because Airbnb is widely known and the marketplace connection is understandable.

The company could also simply say it is a marketplace for dance and movement classes.

THE ONE-LINER CHECKLIST

A strong one-liner explains what you do, the problem being solved, and who it is for.

It avoids jargon, marketing language, and a long lead-up. The listener should understand the product quickly and be able to repeat the idea.

WHY LAUNCH CONTINUOUSLY

LAUNCH BEFORE THE PRODUCT IS COMPLETE

You can test the concept and message before building a fully functioning product.

Early reactions reveal whether people understand the idea, care about the problem, and respond to the way you describe the solution.

TEST THE MESSAGE AND THE PRODUCT

Before the product exists, test the idea and wording.

After an MVP exists, test real usage. Watch what users click, where they stop, what they request, and whether the product becomes part of their behavior.

DIFFERENT CHANNELS REACH DIFFERENT USERS

Launching through several channels helps determine whether you are speaking to the right audience.

A weak response may come from channel mismatch. Each community, platform, or network exposes the startup to a different user group.

NINE TYPES OF STARTUP LAUNCHES

THE LAUNCH MENU

The talk presents nine launch types:

Silent, friends and family, stranger, online community, social media or blogger, request access, pre-order, press, and new feature or product launch.

A startup can use several of them over time.

1. SILENT LAUNCH

Publish the minimum needed for someone to discover and understand the company:

A domain, company name, short description, contact method, and one call to action.

The call to action may be joining a newsletter, waitlist, or launch notification list.

SILENT LAUNCH EXAMPLE: LARA

Lara used a basic page containing its domain, company name, short description, and a waitlist call to action.

The example shows the minimum structure for a silent launch: enough information to make the startup understandable and actionable.

2. FRIENDS AND FAMILY LAUNCH

At the idea stage, practice the one- or two-sentence pitch. Once an MVP exists, share it quickly and watch people use it.

Use this launch to remove obvious confusion, then move toward target customers who experience the actual problem.

FRIENDS AND FAMILY EXAMPLE: REDDIT

Reddit was initially shared among founders in Y Combinator’s first batch.

This familiar group gave the founders an environment for early use and feedback before the product reached a broader public audience.

3. STRANGER LAUNCH

Approach target users who have no personal reason to support you.

Ask about their existing workflow, current pain, and failed alternatives. Their behavior gives a stronger signal because they will only engage when the problem and product matter.

STRANGER LAUNCH EXAMPLE: DOORDASH

The founders were exploring technology for small businesses when a store manager showed them a large book of unfulfilled delivery orders.

After interviewing more than 200 businesses and hearing the same pain, they built an early delivery MVP within hours.

4. ONLINE COMMUNITY LAUNCH

Use communities such as founder networks, professional groups, Reddit, Hacker News, or industry forums.

Join communities you genuinely understand. Match the tone, explain the product directly, and avoid heavy promotional language.

ONLINE COMMUNITY EXAMPLE: ROBINHOOD

Robinhood’s simple site promised commission-free trading and displayed each person’s waitlist position.

A third party posted it on Hacker News. It reached the top, producing about 10,000 signups on the first day and more than 50,000 in the following week.

5. SOCIAL MEDIA OR BLOGGER LAUNCH

Use social platforms, blogs, newsletters, and creators to publish useful content before and during launch.

The objective is to earn attention from people already interested in the problem, then give them a clear path toward the product.

SOCIAL MEDIA EXAMPLE: ANJA HEALTH

Anja Health’s founder committed to publishing TikTok content while building the company’s community.

Within about one month, the account reached 10,000 followers, creating an early audience before the complete product launch.

6. REQUEST ACCESS LAUNCH

A request-access or waitlist launch lets users express interest before receiving full access.

The startup can onboard people gradually, learn from each group, and manage limited capacity. The risk is waiting too long and losing the user’s original interest.

REQUEST ACCESS EXAMPLE: SUPERHUMAN

The talk points to Superhuman as a successful waitlist launch.

Users requested access before entering, allowing the company to control onboarding. Conversion becomes harder as waiting time increases, so the rollout should keep moving.

7. PRE-ORDER LAUNCH

Hardware and physical-product startups can collect orders before the finished product is widely available.

Platforms such as Kickstarter and Indiegogo can support this approach, although customers have become more skeptical about crowdfunding promises.

PRE-ORDER EXAMPLE: CROWDFUNDING

The source gives a platform-level example through crowdfunding platforms.

A startup can open a pre-order campaign on Kickstarter or Indiegogo, using customer commitments to test demand before larger production. The model should fit the product and delivery capability.

8. PRESS LAUNCH

A press launch introduces the company through journalists or publications.

For an early startup, coverage can be difficult to obtain. Its strongest use is temporary visibility among early users and investors. Sustained growth still depends on product value and repeatable acquisition.

PRESS LAUNCH EXAMPLE: THE TYPICAL PATTERN

The source describes the typical press pattern.

Coverage may place the startup in front of early users and investors for a short period. The next challenge is converting that attention into product usage, retention, and repeatable growth.

9. NEW FEATURE OR PRODUCT LAUNCH

A startup can relaunch whenever it releases a product, feature, integration, or important improvement.

Use the channels built earlier to explain what changed, why it matters, and what existing or new users should do next.

NEW PRODUCT EXAMPLE: STRIPE

Stripe repeatedly launches new products through its blog, social media, Hacker News conversations, and press outreach.

Each release becomes another opportunity to educate the market, engage its community, and attract users.

HOW TO USE THE LAUNCH TYPES

LAUNCH IN EVERY RELEVANT COMMUNITY

Plan a distinct launch for each community where you already participate.

Bookface gave YC companies a friendly founder audience. Hacker News offers Show HN. Other products may fit Reddit groups, professional networks, or specialized forums.

BE AUTHENTIC TO THE CHANNEL

Communities differ in tone, audience, and interests.

Research what members care about. Explain what you built without excessive marketing language. A useful, honest introduction is more effective than generic promotion.

BE EVERYWHERE THAT MATTERS

When asked how they found their first users, the Replit founders emphasized broad presence across Hacker News, Twitter, Reddit, and other relevant places.

Apply this through persistent activity where likely users already spend time.

MOVE WAITLISTED USERS INTO THE PRODUCT

A waitlist measures interest and begins the conversion process.

As waiting time increases, users become harder to convert. Move from captured interest to real product usage as quickly as the startup can support.

TREAT PRESS AS TEMPORARY VISIBILITY

Press may provide a temporary increase in visibility.

Early founders gain more durable value from product learning, user conversations, retention, and repeatable distribution. Use coverage as one launch channel inside a wider growth system.

BUILD YOUR OWN COMMUNITY

Start with something simple, such as an email list of supporters.

Engage people consistently throughout the company’s progress. Over time, this becomes an owned channel for product releases, feedback, education, and support.

EVERY RELEASE IS ANOTHER LAUNCH

When a new feature or product is ready, return to your email list, communities, social channels, customers, and press contacts.

Continuous launching compounds because each cycle strengthens the product, message, audience, and distribution network.

THE CONTINUOUS LAUNCH SYSTEM

STEP 1: EXPLAIN IT CLEARLY

State the company name, what it does, the problem it solves, and who it serves.

Remove jargon and background stories. Test whether another person can understand and repeat the description without needing additional explanation.

STEP 2: PUBLISH THE MINIMUM

Secure the domain and publish a simple landing page.

Include the company name, short description, contact information, and one call to action. Early reactions can begin while visual details and brand elements continue improving.

STEP 3: MOVE TOWARD REAL USERS

Test first with friends and family, then quickly reach people who genuinely experience the problem.

Watch their behavior, ask about current solutions, and look for repeated pain that can guide the product.

STEP 4: TEST MULTIPLE CHANNELS

Use online communities, social media, blogs, request access, pre-orders, or other relevant channels.

Compare who responds, what message works, and whether those users continue using the product after the first interaction.

STEP 5: FIND THE USERS WHO LOVE IT

Identify the small group that values the product most.

Learn what they love, what problem is being solved, and why they chose your product. Improve that experience before trying to satisfy a much larger but indifferent audience.

STEP 6: IMPROVE AND RELAUNCH

A weak launch provides evidence for the next attempt.

Adjust the product, message, audience, or channel based on what happened. Then launch again. Each cycle should produce clearer evidence and a stronger version of the startup.

THE FINAL PRINCIPLE

Launching is a continuous startup discipline.

Release early enough to learn. Explain the company clearly. Reach users through several relevant channels. Build a small core of people who care deeply, improve what they value, and launch again.

LAUNCH SOONER THAN YOU THINK

Most first-time founders wait too long.

They keep polishing, adding features, and preparing for a launch nobody is watching.

A startup launch is not a final performance. It is the first real test of whether the problem, customer, message, and product are moving in the right direction.

THE REAL PROBLEM

Before launch, everything still feels possible.

The product has not been rejected. The market has not disagreed. The founder can keep believing the next feature will make everything work.

Launching removes that comfort. It replaces imagination with evidence.

WHY FOUNDERS DELAY

FEAR OF BEING SEEN

As long as the product stays private, nobody can judge it.

Once it launches, people can ignore it, criticize it, misunderstand it, or refuse to pay.

That feels personal because founders often connect product performance with their own intelligence and identity.

FEAR NOBODY WILL SHOW UP

Founders often fear the launch will attract no users, no traffic, and no excitement.

Then they must face a painful question: what were the last three, six, or twelve months for?

But silence is not a verdict. It is information about distribution, positioning, timing, or customer selection.

BIG-COMPANY THINKING

Many founders learned product development inside mature companies.

They saw polished products, large teams, major press events, and launches planned for years.

A startup cannot copy that model. It has less money, less time, fewer people, and far more uncertainty.

PRODUCT EMBARRASSMENT

Founders compare their first version with products that have been improved for years.

That comparison creates embarrassment.

Your MVP is not competing with a mature product's polish. It is testing whether one painful problem matters enough for someone to accept an imperfect solution.

THE LAUNCH MYTHS

YOU ONLY LAUNCH ONCE

A startup does not get one launch.

You can launch the first version, a new feature, a new market, a new positioning, a new pricing model, or a better onboarding flow.

Each launch is another experiment, not the final judgment on the company.

EVERYONE WILL REMEMBER

Founders feel their launch is the center of the world.

For everyone else, it is one tab, one post, or one moment in a busy day.

Most people will not remember a weak launch. They will close the page, continue their work, and remain available to try the product again later.

A BAD FIRST IMPRESSION IS PERMANENT

People rarely create permanent blacklists because an early product was rough.

They may ignore it today and return months later when the product is more useful.

The real danger is not a weak first impression. It is staying invisible so long that the company never learns what needs improvement.

THE FIRST LAUNCH MUST BE BIG

When founders treat launch day as a major event, every detail starts feeling critical.

That increases scope, cost, and anxiety.

A smaller launch is often better. It reduces pressure, creates faster feedback, and allows the team to fix mistakes before more people arrive.

WHAT LAUNCHING IS REALLY FOR

LAUNCH TO REPLACE ASSUMPTIONS

Before launch, almost everything is an assumption.

You assume the problem matters, the customer cares, the message is clear, the workflow makes sense, and the product creates value.

Launching turns those assumptions into observable behavior.

LAUNCH TO LEARN FASTER

Every week before launch is a week without real customer evidence.

You can improve design, architecture, and features while still solving the wrong problem.

Early users reveal where they hesitate, what they misunderstand, what they value, and what they are willing to pay for.

LAUNCH TO REDUCE FEAR

The first launch feels frightening because the outcome is unknown.

Once it happens, the mystery disappears.

Even when the result is weak, the founder learns that the company survives. The team can fix the product, adjust the message, and launch again.

MAKE LEARNING THE GOAL

Do not define the first launch only by revenue, press, sign-ups, or virality.

Define it by learning.

What did users understand? Where did they stop? Who cared most? What objection repeated? Which assumption was wrong?

Useful answers are progress.

FIND THE RIGHT EARLY USERS

MOST PEOPLE ARE NOT EARLY ADOPTERS

Most people do not want unfinished products.

They prefer familiar tools, complete features, strong support, and proven reliability.

That does not mean the startup is wrong. It means those people are not the right users for the current stage.

FILTER, DO NOT CONVINCE

If 100 people visit, your job is not to persuade all 100.

Your job is to identify the five who urgently feel the problem and will tolerate an imperfect solution.

Those users give better feedback because they have a real reason to make the product work.

LOOK FOR HAIR-ON-FIRE PROBLEMS

A strong early customer has a problem painful enough to overcome product friction.

They may accept manual onboarding, missing features, basic design, or founder-led support because the result matters now.

Their willingness to use a rough product is evidence that the problem is real.

BUILD FOR A SMALL GROUP WHO CARE

A startup does not need one million people who think the product is acceptable.

It needs a small group who would be disappointed if it disappeared.

Those users return, give detailed feedback, recommend it, forgive imperfections, and help shape the product.

LEARN TO LOVE REJECTION

Rejection helps narrow the market.

Some people do not have the problem. Some do not feel enough urgency. Some need features the startup should build later.

A clear no can save months of building for the wrong audience.

WHEN NOBODY USES IT

TREAT SILENCE AS A SYSTEM PROBLEM

If nobody uses the product, do not immediately conclude the idea is dead.

Find the broken stage.

Are people seeing the offer? Do they understand it? Are you targeting the right group? Do they start but fail to finish? Do they use it once and never return?

CHANGE ONE VARIABLE

Do not change the product, audience, pricing, message, and onboarding at the same time.

Change one variable, observe the result, and compare.

Try a clearer message, a narrower segment, a simpler demo, a different channel, or a shorter path to value.

FIND THE WRONG ASSUMPTION

When growth does not happen, at least one important assumption is wrong.

Maybe the problem is weak. Maybe the buyer is different. Maybe the timing is wrong. Maybe the product works but the message does not.

The founder's job is to identify the assumption and form a better hypothesis.

LAUNCH AGAIN

After changing the product, audience, or message, launch again.

Do not wait for a dramatic relaunch.

Show the revised version to users, measure what changed, collect new feedback, and continue. Progress comes from repeated contact with the market.

HOW EARLY IS TOO EARLY?

THE PRODUCT MUST WORK

Launching early does not mean launching something completely broken.

The core action must work and create some real value.

A user should be able to complete the main job, even when the process is manual, the design is basic, or the product lacks secondary features.

CUT THE SCOPE

List everything you believe is required before launch.

Then remove what does not directly produce the core customer outcome.

Accounts, dashboards, automation, settings, reports, and integrations can often wait. The founder can handle many steps manually during the first stage.

DO THINGS THAT DO NOT SCALE

Early automation can waste weeks on a process customers may not value.

Manually create accounts. Personally onboard users. Send reports yourself. Fix data by hand.

Manual operations reveal what should eventually be automated and what should be removed.

TEST DEMAND WITH IMPERFECTION

When someone uses and pays for an imperfect product, that signal matters.

It shows the problem is painful enough to overcome friction.

A polished product can hide weak demand. A rough but useful product exposes whether the core value is genuinely important.

THE FOUNDER LAUNCH SYSTEM

STEP 1: DEFINE THE CORE VALUE

Write one sentence:

For this specific customer, the product helps them achieve this specific outcome.

Build only enough for that promise to become real. Everything else is optional until users prove it matters.

STEP 2: CHOOSE A SMALL AUDIENCE

Pick a customer group with a clear and urgent problem.

Do not launch to everyone.

A narrow audience gives clearer feedback, sharper messaging, faster sales conversations, and a better chance of finding users who genuinely care.

STEP 3: SET A LEARNING GOAL

Choose one main question before launch.

Will users complete the core action? Will they return? Will they pay? Which message gets replies? Which customer segment responds fastest?

A specific learning goal makes the launch measurable.

STEP 4: LAUNCH MANUALLY

Recruit the first users yourself.

Send direct messages. Run demos. Create accounts manually. Watch people use the product. Ask what confused them and what outcome mattered.

At this stage, direct contact is more valuable than scalable distribution.

STEP 5: REVIEW THE EVIDENCE

Users may say they like the idea and still never return.

Prioritize behavior.

Who completed the workflow? Who came back? Who paid? Where did people stop? Which users asked for the product again?

Behavior reveals stronger truth than compliments.

STEP 6: FIX THE BIGGEST BLOCKER

Identify the single issue most responsible for lost users.

It may be unclear positioning, slow onboarding, missing value, poor targeting, or a broken core action.

Fix that blocker first. Small focused improvements create clearer learning than broad redesigns.

STEP 7: LAUNCH AGAIN

Show the improved version to users again.

A startup should not wait months between market tests.

Use each launch to measure whether the latest change improved attention, activation, retention, payment, or referrals. Then repeat the cycle.

THE FINAL PRINCIPLE

Your first launch is not the moment your startup is judged forever.

It is the moment real learning begins.

Make the core value work. Put it in front of the right people. Study what happens. Fix the biggest problem. Launch again.

Speed of learning becomes startup advantage.
